5 Wonderful Reasons To Value Wisdom
Does wisdom have a place in your life? The Proverbial writer instructed us with, ‘wisdom is the beginning way to reverence our God.’ Reverence of God is not high on the world’s priority list. In fact, jokingly many boast of their irreverent attitude and views. It should not be so, among the people of God. Father God calls us, the people of God to reverence Him and His Son, Jesus. Some defining terms of reverence are respect, honor, esteem, count worthy, and I might add remain teachable.
Yet, it (wisdom) is not relegated to God’s house alone. The first chapter of Proverbs says, ‘Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets; she crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words…In other places in Scripture it is said, Wisdom stands at the street corner.
In other words, we all have a need for wisdom. And the spirit of wisdom is always seeking those who don’t know or understand her value. Here are five wonderful reasons you should want wisdom in your life.
Wisdom is precious. Even though wisdom is described as seeking those who need wisdom at the same time it is of precious value and should be sought after as one would seek silver or hidden treasure. For any challenge, problem or crisis, there’s always a need for wisdom. Wisdom is the ability to use knowledge and experience to make good decisions and judgments.
Later, we’ll cover the different kinds of wisdom to make sure we are choosing the best of the best–God’s wisdom. Apostle James gives a beautiful definition of wisdom that we will cover more closely during this study: The scripture that describes wisdom from above is James 3:17–18, which states: James 3:17: “But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.”
Wisdom is a defense. I favor this one because it kept resounding in my heart for us in a post-pandemic world. Psalm 91 has become God’s heavenly hedge in Scripture as well as His covenant with his people. Wisdom is a defense. According to Proverbs 1:33 But whoso hearkeneth (hears and obeys) unto me (wisdom) shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil. Ecclesiastes 7:12a: “For wisdom is a defense.., Also Proverbs 3:23 Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble.
Wisdom values education. Wisdom loves instruction, understanding, and knowledge. This is where I often get misty-eyed. I think of our youth and see many of them turning away from education for various reasons: lack of funds, vision, or plain old lack of patience. They don’t want to take the time and diligence it takes to get an education. The case for this is it still opens many doors that would not normally be open to those without an education.
History tells us mass education first flourished in the Printing Age. Books were printed for a mass audience for the first time. Scripture instructs us the wise person looks for knowledge. Along with that, my people perish for lack of knowledge. In many ways, ignorance is a very costly state of being. (Proverbs 1: 2,3
Wisdom is better than money. First time I encountered this concept in scripture, I said whaaat! Wisdom is better than money. How can this be Lord? A new faith experiment began. So, I’m excited to express what I learned so far in later posts. I welcome any good results you receive on finding out how ‘wisdom is better than money.’ Here’s the scripture reference, Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding, …For her benefit (income) is more profitable than silver, and her gain better than gold and even more precious than jewels.’ Proverbs 3: 13-15
Wisdom brings business success. I’ve grown to call the book of Proverbs, the book of wisdom and now the business book. I began to see so many business principles that I already know and practice and others I look forward to grow in as my business progresses.
Wisdom Reconciles Us to heavenly Father. One of the main purposes of wisdom is to know our heavenly Father God better. It brings understanding of the reverence of the Lord and the knowledge of God. My prayer along with the Hebrew writer puts it like this, ‘My prayer is that you would ask the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, to give you the Spirit, who will make you wise and reveal God to you, so that you will know him. (Ephesians 1:17)
FAITH IN ACTION
Which point speaks to you the most? Pray and ask the Lord’s guidance. Meditate the scripture reference. For example, ‘Wisdom is better than money: Proverbs 3:15-18’
NOTES
Ecclesiastes 7:12: “For wisdom is a defense, and money is a defense: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it”
Ephesians 1:17, which says, “That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him.”
Silver, gold, jewels were like money in ancient days, an early means of exchange.
